A Veterans Day THANK YOU!

Mayor Benjamin Weinstock, and the Board of Trustees of the Village of Cedarhurst, along with the members of the Lawrence-Cedarhurst American Legion Post 339 gathered on a very windy Friday, November 11th at the Cedarhurst Veteran’s Memorial Plaza to salute our men and women of the United States Armed Forces.  It was a day to recognize our Veterans, past and present, who fought for our freedom.

Commander Syd Mandelbaum, U.S. Air Force Reserves Veteran, presided over the program.  Rev. James Drew, Associate Pastor of the Five Towns Parishes began with an insightful Invocation and Rabbi Matthew Futterman, of Temple Beth El offered a poignant Benediction. Lawrence High School student, Noemi Viola, sang a beautiful rendition of our National Anthem and fellow student, Jerry Reyes, played a mournfully trumpeted Taps.

Three long time members of the Post, John McCabe, William “Bill” Murphy & Maurice Sullivan, who died this past year were remembered in a special way.  Moving stories were presented by fellow firefighters of the Lawrence Cedarhurst Fire Department, on behalf of their member John McCabe. Commander Mandelbaum added: “These three members will forever be etched into the Veteran’s Memorial Plaza Walkway for all to see.  Their service to our country and to their Post will never be forgotten.”

Mayor Weinstock ended with “What has always made America great, what has always made us exceptional, are the patriots, who generation after generation, dedicate themselves to building a nation that is stronger and freer.  On this day and every day, we thank you.”
