Did you know throwing out everyday items such as aerosol cans, fluorescent bulbs, household cleaning chemicals, pesticides, and batteries can be very harmful to the environment? These toxins that sit in our landfills can end up in our drinking water as well as in our bays and estuaries.
On Sunday, October 16th from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. let’s put a stop to it. The Town of Hempstead will host the S.T.O.P program at North Woodmere Park, located at Branch Boulevard and Hungry Harbor Road in North Woodmere.

Notes on hazardous waste disposal: Wrap leaky containers in newspaper, and place in a plastic bag or larger container; make sure all lids are tight. Place items securely in a box for transport and place cardboard or newspaper around items to prevent them from spilling. Place chemicals that may react with each other separately. Do not leave products in a hot, unventilated vehicle for an extended period of time. Do not smoke near chemical products and wear gloves when handling containers. Waste from commercial establishments, schools, churches, synagogues or home businesses will not be accepted. No commercial vehicles permitted.
At S.T.O.P., you can also help promote energy efficiency by bringing in your old INCANDESCENT light bulbs. TOH will exchange your old bulbs for FREE with new energy efficient ones (limit of 5 bulbs per household, while supplies last).
Do you have old mercury–based thermostats laying around in your house? TOH will help dispose of them and will give you a $5 gift card to a local home center (limit of 5 offers per household).
Please note that electronic recycling items will only be collected at E-Cycle events. The town’s upcoming E-Cycle event is scheduled for Sunday, October 23rd at Town Park Point Lookout (Lido Boulevard in Point Lookout) from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
