Governor Kathy Hochul announced the burn ban on Tuesday, citing heightened fire risks due to ongoing drought conditions in the state. More than 5,000 acres of woodlands are now burning in uncontrolled fires north of NYC.
The ban prohibits outdoor fires for activities such as brush and debris disposal, as well as uncontained campfires, recreational fires, and open flames used for cooking. The burning of brush and debris is also prohibited within the Village.
However, small, contained fires such as those in backyard fire pits or campfires no larger than three feet in height and four feet in any dimension are still permitted, as long as they are attended at all times and properly covered. For safety, always keep a hose or bucket of water nearby to extinguish the fire when you’re done.
